Broadcom ended the availability of the free version of ESXI that I once used for my servers. I am going to discuss here what I wish to have in a server and what I have obtained in order to no longer use ESXI ever again. What I use provides more for home use anyway.
Wanted in a server:
Enough muscle to run virtual machines for any operating system I may wish to utilize and a method to manage them.
Use the ZFS file system for file storage.
Able to utilize Docker.
What I am using:
An AsRock Rack C246 WSI Mini-ITX Server Motherboard running a i5-8400 CPU @ 2.80GHz with 32GiB of memory. I could go to 64GiB to help virtual machines numbers but I tend to use only one virtual machine at a time. I use Docker for most things so a lot of virtual machines aren't really needed. Using Virtual Machine Manager for managing the virtual machines. I use Ubuntu Server LTS for the various software implementations also allowing me to use ZFS for storage. Does this create a type 1 hypervisor like ESXI? You can decide but more in that you can use Docker.
I sold the ASRock Rack C3758D4I-4L Mini-ITX Server Motherboard that was in this case to partially fund the new server. The i5-8400 does use more power than the Denverton but it runs virtual machines a lot better.
I will cover in more detail what I am doing and how a manage things from Arch Linux or Windows 11.
