I first wrote about my bash script Strings before and with it I used the Cinnamon desktop with Linux Mint icons along with a lot of their applications. Arch Linux was the underlying distribution and I had all of this together because I like the Linux Mint icons and such along with Arch Linux.
What I am going to talk about here is why I stopped using Strings and what I am doing instead.
I stopped using it because it didn't work recently as I expected and rather then conclude why it did not I just installed the Linux distribution Manjaro. I used their Cinnamon distribution and then modified it to the desktop I wanted which ended up being what I have used for years now. Yes it requires more time to install but considering the time probably required to conclude what is wrong with my Strings script I decided to let a distribution maintain the underlying Arch Linux for now. I have been experimenting with it in a KVM virtual machine so I have not wiped my everyday computer yet. I have just prepared myself for the possibility. The last time I actually used my Strings script was for an HTPC I have connected to my TV.
I did try another distribution named EndeavourOS before Manjaro. But I had issues with it in a KVM virtual machine and decided to use Manjaro instead. I do like the minimal applications EndeavourOS installs. I just remove what I do not need in Manjaro.
So my script Strings is no longer on GitLab account. Just this website now
